To Go Barefoot or Not?

I get asked all of the time whether I’m one of “those” people that buy into the whole barefoot concept.  Without any hesitation at all, I quickly respond “YES!”  Now, with that said, there is a way to get back to being barefoot.  This is where I believe that the whole barefoot movement has gotten its bad wrap.  People hear about this trend and think that it means that from that point forward you never wear shoes again or only where shoes like Vibrams.  Okay, maybe they’re not that drastic, but you get my point.  People assume that they don’t have to modify anything and that they can just pick up where they left off in their last training run, last workout session, etc.  This is where the injuries come into play and that’s where people get the belief that barefoot running is bad.  At least this is my theory.  Honestly people, does that make any sense?  It would be like taking a year off from running and just expecting to go out for a run and be able to run as if you had never taken any time off!  OR, it would be like taking a year off from the gym and just expecting to walk in there one day and lift as much weight as you were before you quit.  That just doesn’t work.  We all understand the concept of  “if you dont’ use it, you lose it” right?  Well, the same thing is going on in your feet with transitioning to a barefoot lifestyle.  You CAN go barefoot, but you have to EASE your way into it, ESPECIALLY, if you’re a person who is wearing orthotics and NEVER go without them, which means you NEVER, or next to never, go barefoot!  You can’t expect to just start running barefoot and not have any issues.  This is where I come into play or another trained professional that understands these concepts.  My biggest belief is that we were born barefoot and were meant to be that way.  I believe that the way the shoe industry has been for the last 50 years has done nothing but help our feet NOT function properly.  Everyone focused in on making a more supportive shoe.  They made the shoes so supportive that our foot didn’t have to do anything anymore, which has created big issues not only in the foot but throughout the whole body.  Our feet are our foundation.  You know what they say about having an unstable foundation right?  Without a strong, stable foundation, the rest of the ‘house’ or in our case, ‘body’ won’t be able withstand any forces without breaking down.  This is exactly what we’ve done.  So, when I get asked how I feel about going barefoot, I think you can tell that I’m VERY passionate about the concept and believe in it wholeheartedly.

There is so much more to this story too. Throughout the rest of the life of this blog, I will be posting pointers, interesting case studies, biomechanical issues, common injuries and how to prevent them, interesting concepts, etc.  This is my promise to you.  I’m going to help more people understand the concept of going barefoot and just how, they too, can achieve that goal without going through pain to get there.

Basketball, Volleyball, Soccer

I have been going to Advanced Body Dynamics for five years and they have helped me through so much. I played Volleyball, Basketball and Soccer in high school and they helped keep my body healthy so I could always stay in the game. Whether it was a sprained ankle, bone contusion, inflamed lymph node, foot sprain in both feet or a concussion, they always knew exactly what to do and how to help me recover. It was also always nice to go in and get a tune up to make sure my body was well adjusted during any season.  It’s amazing how much it helps and how much better you feel after an adjustment. Pat and Kelly are great people and they’re not just doctors, they really do care about me personally too.

I first went to Advanced Body Dynamics after falling off during the High Prairie horse shows.  My back hurt so bad that I had to scratch the first week of showing.  I couldn’t even flat my horse.  Pat and Kelly were amazing and helped me recover by the following week!  I was back in the saddle and successfully competing!  I would highly recommend them to anyone.

Competitive Athlete

I’ve been a competitive athlete since I was 5 yrs old, playing soccer primarily.  I started Elite racing triathlons 6 years ago along with club swimming.  I’ve been going, going for quite some time playing at very competitive levels.  At the end my Freshman year in high school I received an injury to my eye where I had 3 fractures to my face, with the worse being an orbital blowout.  I was devastated, and worried that my entire athletic career was over.  I recovered quickly and was able to train within 4 months of my accident, but when school started back up I started having recurrent headaches which sometimes led to a migraine.  I had to be homeschooled because I was missing so much school because of these headaches, but still able to train whenever I could.  My triathlon coach suggested going to Advanced Body Dynamics to see if they could do something for my pain that I was still having due to the accident.  I wasn’t getting any relief from medications that my medical providers were experimenting with me.  I had alternative medical treatments before for other injuries that I’d had and so was willing to give Advanced Body a try.  That was 3 years ago.  I couldn’t believe that this was the first treatment that I’d have other than acupuncture that gave me even 30 minutes of relief.  Over time, I was able to recover and have continued to go to see Kelly & Pat for just maintenance purposes for my entire body as I’m so active in training for my sports.  I was a nationally ranked triathlete before the accident, dropped out of the rankings the following year, and now last year I was back up in the top 25 last year among the Elite rankings.  I’m pretty much training full-time in soccer and doing triathlons for fun.  I was recruited by the US Air Force Academy, Univ of Tampa, Maine Maritime Academy, Seattle Pacific University, Denver University, and Dakota Wesleyan to play soccer.  I’m going to be going to play soccer and run track for Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, Iowa next year, and am thrilled to get a scholarship after all that I’ve endured.  Thanks go out to Kelly, Pat, Glen & Jay!

I started coming to Advanced Body Dynamics because my brother Stephen had been coming as a patient after his eye injury.  I’ve played competitive soccer since I was 4 yrs old, started triathlon racing when I was 11 and have since quit competitive racing this year to concentrate on soccer.  Just like my brother I’ve been always doing something athletic.  I’ve had some serious injuries playing soccer to include some bruised ribs and a broken wrist.  Without Advanced Body Dynamics, I couldn’t have recovered as quickly I don’t think.  My coaches would always joke about me going to the witch doctor, but didn’t complain because he needed me out on the pitch and he knew that I wouldn’t be doing this if it wasn’t making me a better player.  I made All-league first team last year as a Sophomore and team Defender of the Year.  I go regularly to Advanced Body Dynamics because I really haven’t stopped training or competing and I need to get that muscular balance that no drink can provide.  I’ve been already contacted by a number of soccer coaches from Division I and II colleges and I wouldn’t be having those opportunities if I wasn’t on top of my game and in the best playing condition that I could be in.  Kelly & Pat know what to do to fix me up!  Plus… they really care about us on a very personal level!

Phenomena Swim Team

More than two years ago, I fell while running at a cross country meet and injured my knee. It was not only cut up, but was also in a lot of pain.  After going through physical therapy and getting no pain relief, my swim coach recommended Advanced Body Dynamics.  After going through a few MAT appointments with Pat, my knee felt great.  Then after adding a few chiropractic appointments with Kelly, my knee was 100% better.

However, that wasn’t the last time I went to Advanced Body Dynamics.  Since those first visits, I’ve had several other injuries from swimming and running.  I broke both my heels during the winter of 2010, got bursitis in my hip last summer, and fractured my foot last September.  Whenever I’ve been injured, I’ve gone to Advanced Body Dynamics.  While they can’t heal my broken bones, they’ve always helped with my recovery.

Even when I’m not injured, I visit Advanced Body Dynamics frequently, just to keep my body “tuned up.”  Over the last few years, I’ve improved a lot as an athlete and I think I owe a good portion of that to Kelly and Pat.  They’ve not only helped me as an athlete, they’ve helped me be healthier.
